Verse Caller
Help
Answers to the questions people ask most. The app’s own Help, under More → Help, has step-by-step guides for every phone brand, and you can always write to us.
Getting started
Why does Verse Caller ask to be my phone app or caller ID app?
Android lets an app show its own screen when your phone rings only if it is your phone app, or your caller ID & spam app. Verse Caller asks to be your phone app first (Full mode), where your phone allows it: its verse screen on every call, a calm screen with the verse while you talk, and its own keypad, favorites and recent calls.
If you’d rather keep your Phone app, Verse Caller asks to be your caller ID & spam app instead (Lite mode, Android 11 and newer). It shows the verse while a call rings, and your Phone app does the rest. On every call, unknown numbers show their country and local time, and you can block any number from the ringing screen.
Your number, your contacts and your call history stay the same, and you can switch back any time. Verse Caller never records calls and never reads your messages.
I have Android 8, 9 or 10
On these versions, verses come with Full mode, so Verse Caller asks to be your phone app. Your calls, contacts and call history stay where they are, and you can switch back any time.
How do I check that it works?
In Verse Caller, open More → Settings and tap Check this phone. It shows a test verse the way a real call does, on the lock screen too, and tells you if a setting needs changing.
How do I switch back?
In Verse Caller, open More → Settings → Calls → Which app handles calls: use your previous phone app, go back to Lite mode, or stop showing verses on calls. Or, in Android, open Settings → Apps → Default apps and choose another app under Phone app or Caller ID & spam app.
Switching never moves your calls or contacts. When you switch back, your Phone app’s own features work as before. On Android 8, 9 and 10, going back to your previous phone app turns verses off until you turn them on again.
When a verse doesn’t show
My verse didn’t show when someone called
Some phone brands, such as Xiaomi, Huawei, vivo and OPPO, show pop-ups only from apps you allow. After a call where the verse couldn’t show, the app’s Help offers the fix for your phone, and More → Settings → Check this phone tests it with you.
WhatsApp calls don’t show a verse
WhatsApp, Messenger and other internet calls use their own call screens. Android lets Verse Caller show verses on regular phone calls only.
Calls show a number instead of a name
Verse Caller needs the Contacts permission to see who’s calling. Without it, calls show the number and a verse from your usual mix, and people’s own verses can’t come. Allow Contacts in Android’s settings, under Apps → Verse Caller → Permissions. Right after your phone restarts, names come back once you unlock it.
Bibles and verses
Which Bibles can I use?
Public-domain translations only, quoted word for word: the King James Version (not offered in the UK), the Berean Standard Bible, the World English Bible, the Douay-Rheims, Reina-Valera 1909, Almeida, Ang Biblia and more. Every Bible and its source.
Why is there no NIV or ESV?
Modern translations need licences. The Berean Standard Bible is a modern English Bible that is free for everyone.
Does it work without the internet?
Yes. Verses on your calls, the Bibles you downloaded, your plans and your prayers all work offline.
Can I choose the verse for one person?
With Premium, each person can have their own verse and theme, so Mom’s calls bring her verse. You can try it free on one person’s next 3 calls.
Privacy and a new phone
What leaves my phone?
A request for the app’s settings (Google Firebase); app usage and crash reports linked to a random app ID (only once you allow them, and never your faith); purchases; and Bible and theme downloads. The free version also shows ads that are never personalized. If your phone backs up to your Google account, Android’s own backup copies your prayers, saved verses, plans, the people you chose and your settings there, not to us.
Your contacts and calls never reach us, and which verse came with which call never leaves the phone, not even in a backup. The privacy policy has every detail.
How do I move to a new phone?
Verse Caller uses Android’s own backup, so there’s no file to make (More → Settings → Backup and new phone shows you where it is). If your old phone backs up to your Google account, set up the new phone from that backup: Android brings back your prayers, saved verses, plans, your choices for each person and your settings as it installs Verse Caller. Only the history of which verse came with which call stays on the old phone.
Premium comes back from Google Play with More → Settings → Premium → Restore purchases.
How do I delete everything?
Open More → Settings → Privacy & data → Delete everything. What it deletes, and what stays.
